Who We Are
Human Book is run by Christian Lilley, the data controller for the personal data described here. Questions about this policy or your data: aibook.mobi@gmail.com.
What Human Book Does
Human Book lets you build a personal reading library on the web, in the iPhone app, on a Kobo e-reader and with the Chrome extension. You can upload e-books, documents and web articles, then read them, listen to them, and ask questions about them with an AI assistant.
What We Collect
- Account information: your email address, your name and an account id, from signing in with email, Google or Apple. If you sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we only receive a relay address from Apple that forwards to you.
- Content you add: the books, documents and articles you upload or save, with their title, author and source address.
- Chats: the questions you ask the AI assistant and its answers, and any rating or comment you give an answer, which saves that conversation with it.
- Reading activity: where you are in each book, your reading history and settings, and the name and a random id of each device you read on (such as "iPhone" or "Chrome on Mac"), so you can carry on where you left off on another device.
- Voice: when you use Talk, on the website or in the iPhone app, your voice is streamed to Deepgram while Talk is on, to turn it into text; we do not store it. The text is sent as a chat question. Text you have read aloud is sent to Amazon Polly to make the audio.
- Feedback: what you write, the page and app version you sent it from, where you were in the book, your device and browser type, and your email if you give it or are signed in. If you ask for updates, we keep your email to send them.
- Usage and diagnostics: how much you use the AI features each day (to apply fair-use limits), error reports from the app, and how long voice replies take.
- Book searches: what you type into Find any book and which result you open, whether or not you are signed in, to learn which books readers want. They are not linked to your account.
- Website analytics: if you allow analytics cookies, the website uses Google Analytics to see which features are used. They are off until you allow them, and you can change your choice with Cookie settings at the bottom of any page. Separately, Vercel Web Analytics counts page views on the website. It sets no cookies and does not identify you. The iPhone app, the Kobo plugin and the Chrome extension have no analytics or tracking.
How We Use It
- To run the service you signed up for: keep your library, sync your place across devices, answer your questions and read books aloud. This is necessary to provide the service to you.
- To fix problems and improve answer quality, using diagnostics, feedback, chat ratings and chat records. This is in our legitimate interest in running a reliable service.
- To reply to your feedback, and to send you updates if you ask for them. You can stop updates at any time.
Who Processes It
We use these services to run Human Book. Each handles your data only to provide its service to us. Some are based in, or store data in, the United States; transfers rely on their standard data protection terms.
- Auth0 (Okta): Sign-in and your account: email address, name, sign-in method.
- Amazon Web Services: Hosting, file storage and server logs; Amazon Polly reads text aloud; feedback is forwarded to us by email.
- Neon: The database holding your library, reading positions and feedback.
- Vercel: Hosts the website, and counts page views on it without cookies.
- OpenRouter and Google (Gemini): Answer your chat questions. They receive your question, the conversation so far and the passages of the book the answer draws on.
- Voyage AI, through OpenRouter: Lets the chat search a book by meaning. It receives the book's text when you add it, and the searches the chat makes to answer your questions.
- Deepgram: Turns your voice into text when you use Talk on the website or in the iPhone app. It keeps the audio only while transcribing it and does not use it to train its models.
- Exa, through OpenRouter: Web search, when a chat answer looks beyond the book.
- Langfuse: Records chat questions and answers so we can check and improve answer quality.
- Google Analytics: How the website's features are used. Not used in the iOS app, the Kobo plugin or the Chrome extension.
If you connect Human Book to Claude or ChatGPT, the book content you ask about is shared with that assistant under its own privacy policy.
What the Chrome Extension Does
The extension only activates when you click the Human Book icon. It does not run in the background, monitor your browsing, or collect data from pages you visit.
When you click "Extract content":
- The extension reads the current page to identify the main article content.
- It highlights what it found and asks you to confirm.
- Only after you confirm does it send the content to our servers to save in your library.
The extension uses the activeTab permission, meaning it can only access the tab you are actively viewing when you click the extension icon. It cannot read other tabs or browse your history.
What We Do Not Do
- We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not use your content to train AI models.
- We do not monitor or record your browsing. The extension only reads a page when you ask it to.
How Long We Keep It
- Your account, library and reading activity: until you delete them or your account.
- Server logs, which include chat records: 30 days.
- Chat records in Langfuse: 28 days.
- Feedback: until we have dealt with it, or until you ask us to delete it.
Your Choices and Rights
You can remove any book from your library at any time; a book you uploaded or saved is then deleted completely. You can delete your account and everything linked to it with Delete account in Settings, in the iPhone app or on the website. If you signed in with Apple, we also ask Apple to remove Human Book's access to your Apple Account. If you can't, email aibook.mobi@gmail.com.
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it, by emailing aibook.mobi@gmail.com. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Human Book is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
We will update this page when what we collect or who processes it changes, and change the date at the top.
